I thought that too, but the characters you choose perform almost solely based on your personal performance. You can easily lose a footrace as Sonic.
However, as you get better at the game, you'll reap the benefits offered by the characters. So, if you're good at the 100 meter dash, you'll be unstoppable as Sonic.
So little kids will buy it and people will make money.
