Why are most characters in Japanese video games (i.e Nintendo) mostly white characters?

You know, Mario and Luigi and Princess Peach, Link and Zelda, and a lot of characters from the Final Fantasy games. I'm not being racist or politically correct but why do a lot of their video game characters seem to be Caucasian?Why are most characters in Japanese video games (i.e Nintendo) mostly white characters?
To appeal to the consumer. Put simply, white children play more video games than anyone.
