In Super Mario Galaxy, is it possible to switch back to Mario after unlocking Luigi?

I have 117 stars, and close to getting Luigi. When you unlock him, does it start a new save file, or can you switch between the two at will? I know you can repeat the game again as luigi too :DIn Super Mario Galaxy, is it possible to switch back to Mario after unlocking Luigi?
